Breaking Down The Podcast Ecosystem In Ghana in 2023

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 1 Min Read

Earlier this year, we created a “guide” on the Ghana podcast ecosystem.

Fast forward and we’re closer to the end of the year so we decided to take a look at the podcast ecosystem. Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

Number of Active Podcast Shows has declined

From our data, there have been over 66 original podcast shows that have produced in Ghana. For context, an “original” podcast show is a podcast that is recorded for podcast distribution and not a recorded radio program that has been turned into a podcast recording.

According to our data, there are currently 35 active podcast shows. We define active podcasts that have produced a new episode within the last 6 months.

The top two podcast categories are Interviews (9 shows) and Pop Culture and Lifestyle (14):

  • Interview podcasts are categorized as such when hosts (and/or co-hosts) interview a person or persons about a particular topic or variety of topics.
  • Pop Culture and Lifestyle shows are when the host or co-hosts and guests discuss topics related solely to pop culture and lifestyle (movies, celebrities, TV shows, influencing etc)

Live Podcast Shows

Live podcast shows have been gaining in popularity. Two podcast shows that have done multiple "live" events this year: Sincerely Accra and Stay By Plan.

Gold Coast Report Network

Currently, Ghana has only one active podcast network which is the Gold Coast Report. All other podcast shows are independently produced. According to our data, Gold Coast Report has 12 active podcasts and has produced a total of 24 podcast shows.
