By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 5 Min Read

We’re close to the end of 2023 and we decided to look back over the year to see who were the standouts in the world of tech and media.

For this article, we’re giving the “Best Of” accolades to some standout companies who had some great achievements and milestones in 2023.

Below is a list of our “Best of” for 2023:

Best Crypto

The crypto world is still reeling from the fallout of Sam Bankman Fried (SBF) and FTX. But in 2023, a company in the crypto world that got a lot of wins was Yellow Card. At the beginning of the year, the company launched its YellowPay feature allows Yellow Card users to transfer money across Africa. The company also got into major partnerships including MoonPay and Jack Dorsey’s company Block.

The company also launched PayPal’s PUSD.

With a solid foundation and multiple partnerships, Yellow Card got our “Best Crypto” for 2023.

Best Fintech

The world of fintech is always competitive. The juggernauts of Flutterwave and Paystack continue to grow beyond their borders and introduce new features. But we decided to look at another company who have been making strides locally. For 2023, our Best Fintech is Hubtel.

Although expressPay is seemingly everyone’s favorite, Hubtel has been quietly making strides in the fintech space. The company has been moving past just payments and has jumped into e-commerce and food delivery.

The company has virtually become a “Super App” and currently offers multiple options including insurance. The company has also been instrumental in partnering with Ghana’s Electric Company of Ghana to power its bill payment system which is now currently cashless.

In this view, Hubtel gets our “Best Fintech” for 2023.

Best AgriTech

Agriculture technology can be slept on sometimes. It’s not flashy but the returns from a good solution can be large.

It was hard to pick from the list of companies which include Grow For Me and others. So as far as scaling and impact, we picked two winners: Farmerline and Complete Farmer.

In 2023, Farmerline expanded to Cote D’Ivoire and Complete Farmer was one of the few startups to raise this capital, raising $10.4 million in September.

Best E-Mobility

The e-Mobility space in Ghana is still in its infancy but many players have been emerging. But so far, SolarTaxi is ahead of the competition. The Kumasi-based company was granted approval to manufacture and assemble EVs in Ghana this year and they were selected for various programs including Qualcomm’s mentorship program and Google’s Climate Change accelerator.

With this track record, SolarTaxi is our Best E-Mobilty for 2023.

Best Transportation

The current field of transportation is mostly by dominated ride-hailing which includes Uber and Bolt. But for our Best Transportation, we’re awarding the company Moove.

The vehicle financing startup has made strides in raising capital and moving into the EV space. The company raised $8 million in July and $76 million in August with support from BlackRock.

The company also veered into vehicle advertising in South Africa and Ghana.

With these accomplishments, Moove picks up our Best Transportation for 2023.

Best Media

When it comes to podcasting, The folks at the Goldcoast Report are doing the most. Currently, the strongest Podcast Network in Ghana with one of the best podcast shows namely “Sincerely Accra”, the network is one of the few new media platforms making big strides with endorsements from Spotify and Afripods.
